In case you were wondering whether my bedroom is slowly being overtaken by paintings-it’s true. I may soon have to start sticking them up on the ceiling. But all in all, it’s quite pleasant being surrounded by scenery from different video games. It’s currently summer here in Australia, and many people will be going to the beach now that school and work are over for the year. Just the thought of the word ‘beach’ makes me think of all the things that accompany it; the smell of sunscreen on your skin, the feeling of warm sand underneath your feet, and the effortlessly calming sounds of the ocean waves. With those thoughts in mind, I decided to paint something that captures that feeling-and what could be more appropriate than Treasure Trove Cove from Banjo Kazooie? The theme song of Treasure Trove Cove is in my opinion one of the catchiest in the game, and every little facet of the level-the crabs, the yum-yums, Snacker the shark, Captain Blubber, and even the squawking of the seagulls as you approach the lighthouse at the top of the cove all combine together to make this level really exciting to play.
I painted this using acrylic paints, which are pretty fast drying and allow me to work quickly. Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out-especially the lighthouse and the clouds. But I feel like the yellow ramps and the ship could have used slightly more detail and precision. As always, thoughts and constructive criticism are both welcome. If this piece made you feel excited about the summer, then my mission is complete. I hope you enjoy it.
